Chesterfield boss Paul Cook will be absolutely delighted with his win. The sides were well matched, but Cook took the points because he won the tactical battle with Latics' boss Micky Mellon, whose side were uncharacteristically passive. Chesterfield did the pacifying.

There was nothing much doing for either side in the opening exchanges, but suddenly Chesterfield arrived in the Oldham box in numbers and Latics became untidy and stretched. The ball went out to Louie Marsh 12 yards out on the Chesterfield left. His shot was handled by Gus Scott-Morriss, the second time in a week that he'd given away a penalty for handball. Mat Hudson saved Bonis's penalty down to his right but he stuck it away on the rebound.

Latics played their best football of the half in response. Scott-Morriss won the ball in midfield, lent it to Norburn and went on the overlap. His cross was dangerous but was cleared for a corner. Robson went down the Oldham left and cut it back for Kavanagh. Boot saved his first shot and Kavanagh, off balance when it came back to him, shanked the rebound wide.

Chesterfield went about their business with composure and were tidy and controlled in defence. They were strangling Latics' midfield, leaving the restored front two of Fondop and Kavanagh feeding off nothing.

When the players went in for the half, Scott-Morriss had a lengthy one-way conversation with the referee, the burden of which seemed to be "Do I have to chop my hands off to stop you from giving a penalty?"

Latics' equaliser came from more or less nowhere five minutes into the second half. Robson got it on the left and waited till the cavalry arrived to cross. While the Chesterfield defenders concerned themselves with Fondop and Kavanagh at the near post, Robson found Favour Fawunmi in the middle of the goal, who buried the header.

Chesterfield's response was devastating. Josh Koroma burst into the Latics box from the Chesterfield left and surged towards goal, leaving Scott-Morriss behind. He cut it back beautifully with the outside of his right boot to Dilan Markanday, who controlled it with his chest and volleyed home from a couple or three yards.

Paul Cook's players were alive to Latics' strengths and set about nullifying them. They had men behind the ball, men going forward to support their front players. They were physical when necessary, but their movement and nous were the chief stiflers of Latics, who just could not find an answer.

Latics' best chance of an equaliser came on 81 minutes when they won a free kick midway through the Chesterfield half on the left. Chilvers' cross was superb, but it bounced off Elliott Nevitt and into the hands of Boot. After their final round of substitutions, Latics had Payne and Pett in midfield, Appiah-Forson wide on the right and Chilvers out on the left. There were chances, but they were unconvincing in the sense that they did not come from anything resembling pressure.

In Mellon's self-help parlance, adversity is opportunity: Latics play Rochdale away in the 409 derby next week, where a victory will guarantee the forgiveness of many past wrongs.
